Rudd makes surprise visit to troops in Afghanistan

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and his wife Therese Rein have made a surprise visit to troops in Afghanistan.

Mr Rudd visited the Australian base in Tarin Kot to thank troops for their service.

On his fifth visit to the base, Mr Rudd told the soldiers that it is time for them to come home.

"Your mums and dads, your brothers and sisters, your wives and husbands and partners, and your kids are all enormously proud of you," he said.

Calls for action on petrol board pricing

A peak motoring group has criticised state and territory consumer affairs ministers for failing to come up with a national standard for petrol price billboards.

The Australian Automobile Association (AAA) wants national legislation for prices displayed at service stations to avoid confusion for customers.
