Refugee tribunals ordered to consider new country assessments

Australia's refugee tribunals have been ordered to take new country assessments into account when deciding on the claims of asylum seekers from countries including Iran, Afghanistan and Vietnam.

About 90 per cent of asylum seekers who arrive by boat are eventually granted refugee status in Australia, and the ministerial directive is part of a Government move to toughen up the asylum seeker claims process.

But Greens say the updated advice is part of a Government drive to have more asylum seekers classified as economic migrants, paving the way for them to be returned to their countries of origin ahead of the election.

Holden worried about impact of FBT changes

Holden said it was assessing the Federal Government's Fringe Benefits Tax policy changes and was worried about the potential impact.

In a statement, the carmaker said its early evaluation suggested there might be a potentially-significant impact on the new car market, particularly on locally-made vehicles.

Holden said it fully supported the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries' call on the Federal Government to reconsider the policy.
