Arthur Sinodinos to give evidence at ICAC inquiry

Former assistant federal treasurer Arthur Sinodinos is today due to give evidence at an ICAC inquiry into Australian Water Holdings, which is linked to disgraced ex-NSW Labor MP Eddie Obeid.

The commission has heard Senator Sinodinos - a former AWH director and NSW Liberal Party treasurer - stood to make up to $20 million if AWH won a lucrative contract with the state-owned Sydney Water company.

AWH is accused of corruptly obtaining money from Sydney Water for executive salaries, political donations and chauffeur-driven limousines around the time Senator Sinodinos served on the board.

The inquiry has heard Senator Sinodinos was on a salary of $200,000 per year for 100 hours work.

ICAC commissioner Megan Latham has said it is unlikely Senator Sinodinos will be found to have acted corruptly, but he has stood aside as federal assistant treasurer while the investigation continues.

Partisan indulgences leave middle Australia cold

Tony Abbott's early days as Prime Minister have seen a continuation of the partisan pointscoring and left-baiting that characterised his political ascendance.

Knights, dames and bigotry dominated last week; they were preceded by attacks on the ABC, the axing of the Climate Commission and a fresh assault on politically correct school curricula.

But new polling suggests Abbott should follow the example of his political father John Howard, who recognised the importance of appeasing middle Australia first and foremost.

Boeing to cut 300 jobs in Melbourne by end of year

Aeroplane manufacturer Boeing will cut up to 300 jobs from its Port Melbourne plant by the end of the year.

The company says it has reached full production rates and no longer needs all of its staff.

Boeing says most of the redundancies will be fixed-term contractors and that it will work to minimise the overall number "through natural attrition".

"We will continue to hire for the critical skills to meet our delivery commitments, and are taking steps to make existing contractors full-time employees where possible," Boeing spokesman Chaz Bickers said.

The Port Melbourne plant employs 1,300 people.

A spokesman for the Manufacturing Workers Union says the cuts are not a sign the business is in decline.
