Brisbane police find 'further leads' in Sophie Collombet murder probe

Police have spent the night patrolling a South Brisbane riverside park where a French university student was murdered a week ago.

Sophie Collombet's naked body was found in Kurilpa Park last Friday morning after she was bashed to death.

Yesterday, Queensland Police released CCTV footage showing the student in the final hours of her life.

Police spent last night at the crime scene near the William Jolly Bridge, stopping passersby in the hope of gaining new information.

Police say they spoke to a number of people and they have some more leads they can follow up on.

Sorry WA, the Senate revote won't change much

Saying this won't do much for the psyche of the West Australian voters forced to vote for a third time in 13 months, but the fact is, the Senate re-run is interesting rather than important.

The Government is fighting hard because it's never a good look to go backwards, but the end result won't be too significant.

The really important stuff happens after that, with the Prime Minister's trade trip to Asia and then the budget in May.

Emails show GM rebuffed Government meetings about Holden

Internal emails show a top General Motors (GM) executive "could see no reason" to meet with the Federal Government just one month before the company revealed it would be shutting down its Holden factories in Australia.

The email chain between staffers in the Federal Industry Minister's office and his department show Holden appearing to ignore and eventually rebuffing the Government's attempts to make contact with General Motors' head of international operations Stefan Jacoby during his visit to Australia in November last year.

"We probably should try to meet this bloke when he's here," Industry Minister Ian Macfarlane emailed to his industry advisor, referring to Mr Jacoby.

However, the advances of the Minister's office were denied and no meeting was established.

Clive Palmer and Ross Garnaut debate carbon tax ahead of WA Senate election

Federal MP Clive Palmer and economist Ross Garnaut have gone head to head in a debate over the carbon tax, with the mining magnate saying it will "definitely" go when the new Senate takes over in July.

The pair debated the issue on Lateline ahead of Saturday's WA Senate election re-run, after the Prime Minister put the carbon tax front and centre as he campaigned in the west this week.

The Senate election will determine how many votes the Coalition will require from a diverse cross-bench of independents, micro parties and the Palmer United Party (PUP) to push legislation through the Upper House.

But Mr Palmer told Lateline that the carbon tax would be repealed when the new Senate is sworn in, irrespective of the vote on Saturday.

"Our party has the balance of power in the Senate right now, even if we're unsuccessful in the election in WA - which we won't be. So the carbon tax is definitely going. It's a fait accompli," he said.
