Government should have done more to protect pink batts workers: coroner

A Queensland coroner has found three men who died while working on the Federal Government's home insulation program had not been given adequate training.

Rueben Barnes, Matthew Fuller and Mitchell Sweeney died while installing roof insulation.

Coroner Michael Barnes today delivered his findings, stating there were "process failings" relating to the handling of the scheme by federal agencies that led to "inadequate safeguards".

Rudd's pre-emptive strike to distance NSW Labor

In the next two weeks, the Independent Commission Against Corruption will deliver its report into jaw-dropping allegations of massive corruption involving cabinet ministers in the former NSW Labor government.

Scientists monitor killer whales after beaching

Marine scientists are monitoring a pod of killer whales off Fraser Island in southern Queensland, hoping that they will swim to deeper water after becoming beached at low tide yesterday.

Two of the killer whales died after becoming stranded on a sand bar yesterday, while five others got away on the high tide.

Killer whales have incredibly strong social bonds, and scientists had feared the survivors would struggle to leave the area after two of their pod died.
