Live: Egyptian military throws Morsi out of office

Egypt's armed forces have overthrown elected president Mohammed Morsi and announced a political transition with the support of a wide range of political, religious and youth leaders.

In a televised broadcast, flanked by military leaders, religious authorities and political figures, General Abdel Fattah Al Sisi announced the suspension of the constitution and a road map for a transition of power.

The president of the supreme constitutional court will act as interim head of state until new elections are held.

A statement published in Mr Morsi's name on his official Facebook page said the measures amounted to "a full military coup" and were "totally rejected".

Follow our rolling coverage for updates, video, photos and analysis as the situation unfolds.

Antibiotic to fight drug-resistant bacteria shows promise
