Murdoch recalled to face British MPs over secret recording

Media tycoon Rupert Murdoch has been recalled to face more questioning by British MPs after he was secretly recorded criticising the police investigation into alleged phone hacking and bribery by his journalists.

In the tape, in which Murdoch is heard speaking to staff at his best-selling Sun tabloid, he says it had been common practice for decades for journalists to pay police for stories - contradicting his public denials of any such practice.

"It's a disgrace. Here we are, two years later, and the cops are totally incompetent," he says on the tape. "We're talking about payments for news tips from cops: that's been going on a hundred years."

News Corporation has confirmed Murdoch will return to London to face fresh questioning over the recording and a spokesman says he looks forward to "clearing up any misconceptions".

Recessions always cause excess capacity - millions of people sitting around not working, tonnes of equipment not being used. And thus when the cycle does turn, this capacity is there ready to return and provide "growth".

Because there was less of a fall during the GFC, there is less spare capacity and thus there hasn't been that boom in growth.
