ABC NewsMail - Afternoon Edition

Good afternoon. Here's what's happening now:

  • A senior police officer in charge during the final hours of the Lindt Cafe seige says he accepts the blame for the death of two hostages. He said officers did not enter the cafe earlier because they believed gunman Man Haron Monis had a bomb in his backpack

  • Happy Days creator Garry Marshall has died, aged 81. Marshall was known for directing the hit films Pretty Woman, Beaches and The Princess Diaries

  • An astrophysicist calculated that there was a one in 87 billion chance that Melania Trump's Republican convention speech was not plagiarised. He's even shared the calculations. Really

The debate over which generation has it tougher could be over. The Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia Report was released today and it wasn't good reading for anyone under 30. Here's five reasons Gen Y is worse off.

Here's what's coming up tonight:

  • 7:30pm AEST: Australia's Ambassador to the United States Joe Hockey will speak to 7.30 from the Republican Convention

  • 9:30pm AEST: Lateline's Tony Jones interviews one of the creators of virtual reality technology, Tom Furness. You can tune in on ABC News 24
