ABC NewsMail - Afternoon Edition

Good afternoon. Here's what's happening now:

  • Malcolm Turnbull announced he would not be nominating Kevin Rudd to become the next United Nations secretary-general, saying the former prime minister was not suitable for the role. Labor responded by calling the decision a sign of weakness

  • An internet troll has been given a 12-month good behaviour bond for comments he made about a woman on Facebook. The court heard he posted a large number of highly offensive and sexually explicit messages over a two-hour period

  • Channel Nine presenter Karl Stefanovic has apologised for being "an ignorant tool" after he caused offence to the transgender community by using the term "tranny" on-air. His apology was praised as sincere on social media

Location-based dating app Happn is being used to make homelessness more visible in Melbourne. Instead of seeing the profile of a potential date, users walking down one street in Collingwood will be introduced to Jody, who spent three months living in a van
