ABC NewsMail - Afternoon Edition

Good afternoon. Here's what's happening now:

  • The fallout from the Four Corners report on mistreatment within the Northern Territory youth justice system continues. PM Malcolm Turnbull announced a royal commission, NT Corrections Minister John Elferink got the sack and the NT Government announced it would build a new youth detention facility

  • The opening day of the Democratic National Convention was dominated by boos from disgruntled Bernie Sanders supporters. US First Lady Michelle Obama got the most positive reponse with her emotional speech describing Hillary Clinton as a "true public servant" who had showed young girls that a woman could be president

  • Bangladeshi police say they have killed nine suspected Islamist extremists who had been planning a large-scale assault. Officials say those killed belonged to the same group blamed for a Dhaka cafe attack, in which 20 hostages were killed

A world-first study has found koalas are clever enough to learn how to use structures designed to reduce road kill. Professor Darryl Jones said he was initially sceptical and thought koalas were "not that smart" but they started using the structures to get safely under roads within three weeks.

Here's what's coming up:

  • 5:00pm AEST: Foreign Minister Julie Bishop and her counterparts from across the Asian region will attend the final day of a security summit in Laos. It's expected China will be pressured to respect a tribunal ruling that rejected its claims to parts of the South China Sea

  • 6:00pm AEST: NT Labor senator Malarndirri McCarthy will be on Radio National

  • 9:30pm AEST: Irish and British prime ministers will meet in London for Brexit talks
