Election too close to call

BREAKING NEWS: Sunday 03 July 2016
Election 2016: Coalition loses seats but neither side can claim victory
A final result in the federal election is not expected for days.

At midnight AEST, the Coalition was on track to win 73 seats, Labor had 66, the Greens and Xenophon Team had one each and there were three independents, with six seats in doubt. Pre-poll and postal votes will now be crucial to determining the final result.

Malcolm Turnbull has said he is still confident the Coalition will win a majority, but Bill Shorten has said the Coalition has lost its mandate.

Here are some of the key results:
  • Barnaby Joyce fended off Tony Windsor's challenge in New England, winning on primary votes
  • Former minister Jamie Briggs lost Mayo to Nick Xenophon Team's Rebekha Sharkie
  • Linda Burney claimed Barton, becoming the first Indigenous woman to win a House of Reps seat
