ABC NewsMail - Morning Edition

Good morning. Here's what's happening now:

  • We're less than two weeks away from the Rio Games, but the Australian team has delayed its move into the Olympic Village due to blocked toilets, leaking pipes and exposed wiring. Australia's chef de mission says "there is much work to be done"

  • The Federal Government is pushing for laws in every state so terrorists can be kept in jail after their sentences expire. Attorney-General George Brandis said it would only apply to very high risk offenders who show no signs of rehabilitation

  • Four Corners has obtained footage whichs shows the tear gassing of six boys being held in isolation at the Don Dale Youth Detention Centre in Darwin in August 2014. One lawyer says the incident amounts to "torture"

Fedor Konyukhov only landed his balloon at Bonnie Rock in Western Australia on Saturday, but the Russian adventurer is already looking ahead to his next adventure after breaking the world record for the fastest hot-air balloon circumnavigation of the Earth

Here's what's coming up:

  • 9:30am AEST: The Tasmanian coroner will hand down findings in the inquest of Jessica Kupsch, who was beaten to death by her partner in Launceston

  • 10:00am AEST: Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Attorney-General George Brandis are expected to make an announcement about anti-terror laws

  • 7:30pm AEST: The Helpmann Awards will be held at Sydney Lyric Theatre

  • 9:35pm AEST: Joining the panel on ABC's Q&A will be MPs Craig Laundy and Ed Husic, as well as Human Rights Commission president Gillian Triggs, Reverend Peter Kurti and Shireen Morris from the Cape York Institute
