Australia must spearhead asylum policy: Morrison

Opposition immigration spokesman Scott Morrison says Australia should not be influenced by other countries when making policy decisions about asylum seekers.

Yesterday's joint Australia-Indonesia communiqué said "unilateral actions" on border protection might jeopardise a regional approach to asylum seekers and was seen as a swipe at the Coalition's "turn back the boats" policy.

But Mr Morrison says it is a reference to Labor's decision to dismantle offshore processing, and stresses that Australia must make decisions based on its own interests.

"That is what John Howard meant when he said: 'We will decide who comes to this country and the circumstances in which they come - and no-one else'.
