ABC NewsMail - Afternoon Edition

Good afternoon. Here's what's happening now:

  • "I am back!" These were Pauline Hanson's first words when she arrived at Parliament House with her three One Nation colleagues today. Australia's 14 new senators will spend the next few days learning the ropes and finding their way through the halls of power, before Parliament resumes on August 30

  • The mother of murdered school teacher Stephanie Scott has spoken in court about the family's grief, saying, "There will be no end to the sorrow." NSW Supreme Court Justice Robert Hulme today began hearing sentencing submissions for Marcus Stanford, who pleaded guilty to being an accessory after the fact to the murder

  • A farmer in Victoria's Yarra Valley claims to have grown one of the largest truffles in the world. How large? We're talking 1.5 kilograms. Its owner Stuart Dunbar says it could fetch up to $3,000 on the wholesale market

Bill Gates has given away billions of dollars to charity but still his net worth keeps going up (he made $15 billion over the past year, with his fortune now at a tidy $90 billion). How does he do it? Let us explain.

Here's what's coming up tonight:

  • 7:30pm AEST: Shadow transport minister Anthony Albanese will speak to 7.30 about being reunited with his father

  • 9:30pm AEST: Labor Senator Penny Wong will be interviewed on Lateline
