ABC NewsMail - Morning Edition

Good morning. Here's what's happening now:

Australian researchers have used X-ray fluorescence to find a figure hidden underneath a 19th century portrait by French impressionist Edgar Degas. The painting, Portrait of a Woman, was known to have another image underneath but the detail remained a mystery, until now.

Here's what's coming up:

  • 7:00am AEST: Rio's iconic Christ the Redeemer statue will be lit up in Brazil's national colours green and yellow to celebrate the opening of the Olympic Games

  • 12:15pm AEST: Newly-elected senator and former talkback host Derryn Hinch will speak at the Melbourne Press Club

  • 12:30pm AEST: ACT Liberal leader Jeremy Hanson will speak at the National Press Club

  • 2:00pm AEST: Sydney shopkeeper Adeel Khan, who was found guilty of the murder of Chris Noble and the manslaughter of Bianka O'Brien and baby son Jude in 2014, is expected to be sentenced in the NSW Supreme Court
