Coming up on day 5 in Rio

Rio 2016
Here's what's coming up on day 5 in Rio
The men's 100m freestyle final is the jewel in the crown and Australia has two gold-medal hopes, with our rowers and cyclists also hoping to claim medals.

Take a look at what is coming up on Day 5 of the Rio Olympics with our handy AEST guide.

Swimming

This is a BIG day in the pool.

Kyle Chalmers and Cameron McEvoy qualified second- and third-fastest for the men's 100m freestyle final at 12:03pm on Thursday. And McEvoy had best swim a cracking race after being held out of the 4x200m final to rest up.

Before that though, we will see the Campbell sisters go around in the women's 100m freestyle. Cate's heat starts at 2:14am and Bronte is immediately after at 2:17am. The semi-finals then start at 11:12am.

Australia has another shot at gold in the women's 200m butterfly. Ranked number one for the season, Maddie Groves qualified fastest and will also be joined by Brianna Throssell in the final, which starts at 11:54am.

After missing out in the 100m, world champion Mitch Larkin will look to get back on track in the 200m backstroke. His heat, alongside compatriot Josh Beaver, is at 2:40am with the semi- finals from 11:28am.

Taylor McKeown and Georgia Bohl will swim their 200m breaststroke heat at 2:57am (semi-finals from 12:11pm).

Thomas Fraser-Holmes and Travis Mahoney contest their 200m individual medley heat at 3:14am (semi-finals from 12:29pm).

And Australia's women's 4x200m freestyle relay team hits the water at 3:31am.

Rowing

Day five could see Australia win its first rowing medal of the Rio Games.

Australia's men's quad sculls team — Karsten Forsterling, Alex Belonogoff, Cameron Girdlestone and James McRae — take on Germany, Poland, Estonia, Ukraine and Great Britain in their final at 11:22pm.

Medal hope Kim Brennan will also contest her single sculls semi-final from 12:30am Thursday.

Cycling - time trials

It's the last day of road cycling for the Games and we finish off with the men's and women's time trials.

The women start at 9:30pm on Wednesday with Katrin Garfoot the best Australian prospect after finishing fourth at last year's world championships. She is set to take off at 9:51pm.

Rohan Dennis will be a chance to medal when the men start at 11:00pm. He finished sixth in Richmond last year and is scheduled to fly out of the gate at 12:30am Thursday.

Basketball

This is it. The moment arguably the best men's basketball team Australia has produced goes up against the presumptive gold medallists, Team USA.

Honestly, the Boomers should not win this game, but their first-up 87-66 win over France and 95-80 victory over Serbia were impressive outings with NBA stars Andrew Bogut, Matthew Dellavedova and Patty Mills among the team's best.

If the Aussie men want to maintain their status as medal prospects then they need to challenge the superstar American team.

The showdown between the two group A leaders tips off at 8:00am AEST.

Other highlights:
