ABC NewsMail - Afternoon Edition

Good afternoon. Here's what's happening now:

  • The Prime Minister has announced the country's big banks will soon be required to report to the Government's Economics Committee. It's all about keeping the banks accountable and that means they'll be asked to explain their policies on interest rates. FWIW, some of the major banks didn't pass on all of yesterday's rate cut

  • Remember how the Government called an early election to settle down the Senate and how that didn't really work out? Well, we now have a clear picture of the Upper House and the number of crossbenchers the Government will have to negotiate with to pass legislation is 11, that's three more than before the election

  • Speaking of the Senate, One Nation has four seats and its senator-elect Malcolm Roberts today called for the Racial Discrimination Act to be repealed saying it was "curbing free speech"

  • The Kelly family has paid tribute to their son Stuart, the younger brother of one-punch victim Thomas who died last month. During the funeral service, the boys' mother Kathy said: "Keep our beautiful boys in your hearts ... go home and hug your children"

The Olympics are only a few days away and it's been a massive logistical exercise for the ABC to get its reporting teams in position in Rio. Take a look behind the scenes

Here's what's coming up tonight:

  • 7:30pm AEST: Bill Shorten will be on 7.30. The program will also have an interview with Ryan Williams about Donald Trump. He's a former spokesman for Mitt Romney

  • 9:30pm AEST: Lateline will take a close look at autism. The program will have an interview with the author of NeuroTribes, a book about how the disorder has evolved
