ABC NewsMail - Morning Edition

Good morning. Here's what's happening now:

  • Five soldiers on board a Russian military helicopter have been killed after it was shot down over Syria. The Russian Defence Ministry said the soldiers had just delivered humanitarian aid to Aleppo

  • A number of flights between Australia and Bali have been cancelled after volcanic ash from Mount Rinjani again sparked safety concerns. Jetstar, Virgin and Tigerair flights have so far been affected. Decisions about whether flights can resume today are due before 9:00am

  • Food contamination scares and cheap, unsafe imports are partly to blame for a 14 per cent rise in the number of products recalled in Australia over the past 12 months. The ACCC is concerned that suppliers are outsourcing production overseas, without ensuring adequate safety protocols are in place

South Sudan's young people are fighting the prospect of civil war through music and radio. A former child soldier turned musician has shared his story of bringing a message of peace through his reggae songs.

Here's what's coming up:

  • 7:10am AEST: Labor Opposition Leader Bill Shorten will be on AM

  • 7:40am AEST: Attorney-General George Brandis will be on Radio National

  • 8:10am AEST: Human Rights Commissioner Gillian Triggs will be on News Breakfast

  • 2:30pm AEST: The Reserve Bank will make a decision on whether it will further cut interest rates
