Coming up on day 6 in Rio

Rio 2016
Day 6 preview — swimmers in line for Olympic Games gold
Australia will be hoping to back up its strong day five showing in the pool with more gold on day six, while there's some medal fancies elsewhere in Rio.

Here's what's coming up on Day 6 (all times AEST):

Swimming

They are the swimming sisters that have Australia captivated in Rio, and on day six Cate and Bronte Campbell will be going head-to-head in the final of the women's 100m freestyle.

Cate is the clear favourite having broken Olympic records in her first heat AND in her subsequent semi-final, but sister Bronte might fancy an all-in-the-family upset. That race will begin at 12:18pm AEST.

Mitch Larkin too is on the hunt for gold in the 200m backstroke, which will be held at 11:26am AEST, while Taylor McKeown is a shot at a medal in the women's 200m breaststroke at 11:17am AEST.

Cameron McEvoy will also be in action in the 50m freestyle heats and (hopefully) the semi-final. The heats begin at 2:00am AEST, while the semis would be from 11:00am.

Canoeing

Jess Fox won silver in the women's kayak in London, and she will have high hopes of going one better this time around.

Fox was not at her best in the heats, qualifying for the semi-final 14th fastest and barely scraping through, but improvement is expected next time round.

Expect Fox to be in action in her semi-final at around 2:15am AEST, and hopefully then competing in the final from 4:00am AEST.

Basketball

The blokes lit up the court on day five, with the Boomers coming oh so close to an incredible upset against the US, but now it's the Opals' turn to make their mark.

Our women's basketball team is 3-0 after wins over Brazil, Turkey and France, and will be more than confident of a win over Japan, which would sew up top spot in the pool.

Tip-off is at 6:45am AEST, and is worth setting the alarm for.

Basketball

The Hockeyroos got their campaign back on track with a 6-1 win over India on day five, but remain on thin ice going into a crucial clash with Argentina.

You will be able to see that match from 7:00am AEST Friday morning.

Other highlights:
  • Rugby Sevens: The Australian men's team was knocked out on day five by South Africa, but the final matches of this competition should be fun to watch. The gold medal match is at 8:30am AEST.
  • Cycling: The qualifying rounds in the velodrome begin from 5:00am AEST, with the men's team sprint finals at 7:21am. Don't expect to be cheering on an Aussie then, though
  • Golf: Our men's pairing of Scott Hend and Marcus Fraser tee off at 10:30pm AEST
