ABC NewsMail - Morning Edition

Good morning. Here's what's happening now:

  • In Thailand, two bombs have exploaded in the tourist resort of Hua Hin. One person has been killed and about 12 have been injured. We're likely to hear more on this story throughout the morning

  • Australia's medal tally in Rio has ticked over again. The latest additions are a silver in rowing as well as Jess Fox's bronze in the women's K1 canoe slalom final. There are plenty more medal hopes today. We're talking Mitch Larkin in the backstroke final as well as the women's 100m freestyle final featuring both Campbell sisters. Say no more, right?

  • There are calls for the child abuse royal commission to expand its inquiry to include the alleged abuse of asylum seekers on Nauru. The calls come from the Human Rights Law Centre, the Council for International Development and the Australian Council of Social Service. The groups have sent legal advice to the commission that says "it can look at the response of the Australian Government"

If you know a gamer, there may have been a time when you thought they appeared to live in another world. Well, in their defence, it's apparently now an entire universe. Games are now so detailed they can simulate an entire universe of stars, planets and moons for players to explore. Good news for the gamers of this particular world ...

Here's what's coming up:

  • 10:00am AEST: A hearing of the child abuse royal commission in Newcastle will hear from Anglican Archbishop Roger Herft

  • 10:15am AEST: The Mark Dreyfus v George Brandis case is back in the Federal Court. Mr Dreyfus is trying to get access to the Attorney-General's diary from 2013

  • 11:17am AEST: Taylor McKeown will swim for gold in the 200m breaststroke final in Rio

  • 11:26am AEST: Mitch Larkin will swim the 200m backstroke final. He's the gold medal favourite

  • As are the Campbell sisters in their 12:18pm AEST 100m freestyle final. Only one can win!
