ABC NewsMail - Morning Edition

Good morning. Here's what's happening now:

  • The impeachment process that has paralysed politics in Brazil for the past nine months has finally reached a conclusion. President Dilma Rousseff has been removed from office for illegally using money from state banks to boost public spending. Her replacement is conservative Michel Temer

  • Booking a flight or a concert ticket might get a little cheaper from today. A new law which bans excessive credit card surcharges has come into effect

  • It looks like there's been life on Earth for longer than we thought. Fossils have been discovered in 3.7-billion-year-old rocks, which pushes the evidence for life back by 220 million years

Artificial muscles. Armoured cars. Fireballs. These are just some of the seriously cool projects that were highlighted at last night's Eureka Prize for scientific research. Check them all out.

Here's what's coming up:

  • 9:30am AEST: The Prime Minister is expected to make a National Security statement in the House of Representatives

  • 10:30am AEST: Rosie Batty and David Morrison will lead a rally against domestic violence in Melbourne

  • 11:00am AEST: Former PM Bob Hawke will launch a book by Anthony Albanese at Parliament

  • 11:00am AEST: Donald Trump will deliver a major speech outlining his immigration policy

  • 11:00am AEST: Sydney man Hamdi Alqudsi faces sentencing after being convicted of helping seven men to fight in Syria's civil war

  • 5:00pm AEST: Labor Senator Pat Dodson will deliver his first speech to Parliament
