ABC NewsMail - Morning Edition

Good morning. Here's what's happening now:

  • A man charged with fraud as part of an investigation into the suspected funnelling of millions of dollars in Australian taxpayer money to Islamic State was authorised to care for children in his home, despite being convicted of threatening to kill someone with a sword at a Sydney shopping centre

  • Australia has failed to secure a hockey medal at the Olympics for the first time since 1984. New Zealand defeated the Hockeyroos 4-2 in the quarter-finals overnight, while the Kookaburras lost to the Netherlands in the quarter-finals a day earlier

  • Australia's women's water polo team has bowed out of the Olympics, losing 5-3 in a penalty shoot-out to Hungary. Meanwhile, track cycling great Anna Meares has finished 10th overall in the women's sprint in what could be her last ever Olympics race

Ever come across the idea that chronic pain is all in the head? Dr Tasha Stanton says that's one of the five common myths about the condition that affects one in five Australians. Here are the other myths.

Here's what's coming up:

  • 9:30am: Australia's former world champion Dani Samuels will take part in the women's discus qualifying rounds

  • 9:35am: The men's pole vault final will be held in Rio

  • 10:20am: Speaker Tony Smith will deliver a speech to introduce new members to the House of Representatives

  • 11:25am: The final of the men's 800m will take place in Rio

  • 11:45am: The women's 400m final will be held

  • 4:00pm: BHP Billiton is expected to report a full year loss approaching $10 billion
