ABC NewsMail - Morning Edition

Good morning. Here's what's happening now:

  • Australian swimmers Emma McKeon and Josh Palmer have been told they can't take part in the closing ceremony in Rio because they broke team protocol by failing to return to the Olympic Village after a night out. Meanwhile, US swimmer Ryan Lochte's mugging story has been undermined by video footage from the night

  • An Adelaide man has been detained without charge in Dubai for the past three weeks. Scott Richards was arrested after he shared a Facebook post which supported the US-based Zwan Family Charity. In the United Arab Emirates, it's illegal to promote foreign charities

  • Egypt's state-run TV station has taken several anchorwomen off the air until they lose weight. The head of the station denies the decision is sexist, but one of the women affected called the move "moral assassination"

Could animal testing ever be banned completely? The uncomfortable truth is that this practice is central to modern medicine. But more recently researchers have been looking at alternatives, including the new technology of organs on computer chips

Here's what's coming up:

  • 10:10am AEST: Australia's Kathryn Mitchell will take part in the women's javelin final

  • 11:00am AEST: Santos' half-year result for 2016 will be revealed

  • 11:30am AEST: All eyes will be on Usain Bolt in the men's 200m final

  • 12:00pm AEST: A ceremony will be held to mark the 50th anniversary of the Wave Hill Walk Off strike against poor work conditions for Indigenous people
